Thanks to new investors, may be coming to Orem, but it will come at a cost. Orem technically has a fiber network called Utopia that’s been in the works for 14 years, but covers only 40 percent of residents. To complete the project, Orem will need the people to pay. College students make up a large part of Orem’s community and almost everything they do is online. Utopia runs itself and lets internet providers use the network. Investment group Macquarie is ready to help finish that network, but it’s all or nothing. If accepted by the council, every Orem resident would be required to pay a certain utility fee that depends on what type of home they reside in. It would be nine to ten dollars for apartments, 18 t0 20 for single family homes, 36 to 40 for businesses and a 2 percent increase each year. The city is now weighing the pros and cons.
